Read the following introduction to the case study:
Global warming is a topic that has elicited much scientific and public opinion with respect to its potential impact on human health, ecosystems, industry, and economy. In general, there are two schools of thought with respect to global warming. There are those in favor of Green House Gas (GHG) regulations, and those who are not.
Those in favor of controlling GHGs argue that CO2 emissions are making our planet hotter, and if CO2 emissions continue to go unchecked, temperatures will continue to rise. Others are not in favor GHG regulations for a variety of reasons. Some not in favor believe global warming climate change is a hoax. Others believe that there is not enough evidence to support the regulation of GHGs, and still others believe that global warming or any type of quantifiable climate change is cyclical, natural, and unavoidable.
Select from the two options below to complete this assignment:
Option 1: You are an EPA Senior Government Official
You are an EPA senior official, and your administration recently announced that the EPA will be regulating GHGs under the authority of the Clean Air Act (CAA). This action might bring costly consequences to those subject to the new regulation. The EPA argues that controlling GHGs, in particular CO2 emissions, is necessary because they trap energy from the sun, thus making our planet hotter. If CO2 emissions are not controlled and continue to go unchecked, the earth’s average temperature may increase by at least 2 degrees Celsius over the next 100 years. At that point, the risk of human mortality increases as a likely result of heat waves, floods and droughts.
Write a summary of at least 350 words with two peer-reviewed sources that argues in support of the government regulation of GHGs.
Include the following in your summary:
- A synopsis of your position
- Why GHGs must be regulated
- The potential benefits of GHG regulation
- What would happen if the government does not act soon to regulate GHS in terms of the potential impact to human health, ecosystems, and the economy
Format your summary according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Option 2: You are a Petroleum Refinery VP
You are a Marketing VP at a petroleum refinery company, responsible for promoting the use of fossil fuels as a reliable energy source. Any control or regulation of GHGs could mean disaster to your company’s bottom line. You are concerned because those in favor of GHG regulation tend to cite climate proxy data, despite the scientific community’s consensus that the earth is headed toward another ice age. Considering that you were recently stuck in northern Virginia for five days due to a major snowstorm that also shut down the federal government for two days, the yearly lowering of global temperatures seems more likely than the existence of a supposed global warming epidemic.
Write a 350- to 500-word summary with two peer-reviewed sources that argues against the government regulation of GHGs.
Include the following in your summary:
- A summary of your position
- Why GHGs should not be regulated
Potential economic and other benefits of GHG deregulation
- What would happen if the government does regulate GHS in terms of the potential economic impact
Format your summary according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.
