Most sociologists explain U.S. racial and ethnic inequality using the conflict theory, which blames the system rather than the individual.

  • Using a conflict theory perspective, which part of the system do you think contributes most toward racial and ethnic inequality in the United States (for example, lack of opportunity in education)? Provide an example of something you’ve read or learned that supports your position.

2) Your response must address the discussion question and you must also comment on at least one other student’s post.

Class, as we continue the social inequality discourse from Week 6, I would like for you to review this very enlightening short video with Ms. Canwen Xu. We are all products of societal norms and values, and these characteristics are often premeditated on our physical and biological makeup as belonging to various racial and ethnic groups. Social identities are often bound to cultural identities that stem from people who share similar biological, ethnic, religious and familial commonalities. While we are probably well aware that race/ethnicity is more of a social construction than a purely biological, the issue of how a person looks, speaks or acts is often a major determinant of his or her life opportunities and acceptance in the society at large. Despite our understanding that there are no pure races and that we are much more mixed in terms of biology than not,race/ethnic relationships present some of the most troubling issues of our time and despite vast improvements in racial relationships, we see that there is much to be done in terms of total acceptance and embracing others in not ony our societies–most societies . Please review this very important video and share your thoughts…keeping in mind to always RESPECT the discussions.
