Envisioning Creativity and Innovation in Your Ideal Learning Environment

The Edinburgh Scenarios were developed in 2008 by a group of international education experts to help educators think about perspectives that could be relevant to future developments in e-learning. For our purposes, we will identify the four quadrants as learning environment profiles.

You are all e-learners. Thus, you have a level of practical expertise gained through experience which allows you to participate in this examination of potential directions in how all learners (whether formally in a classroom or developing capacities to engage in current or future fields of interest) can approach gathering, assessing, analyzing, and deploying information and knowledge in an increasingly technology-mediated world.

If we look at the learning environment profiles as applicable beyond classroom settings, extended to all environments where all forms of learning take place, we can think about how our own disposition toward learning can be harnessed to enhance our own knowledge and apply this knowledge to support creative and innovative approaches in the areas that interest us.

This week you have taken a number of self-assessments and explored materials that have helped you to identify your own personal creativity and innovation profile. You are defining and understanding, with a higher level of critical self-appraisal, or what makes you tick.

For this assignment, you will use the four cardinal points from the Edinburgh Scenarios:

  • Technology Empowers
  • Self-organizing, Emergent
  • Technology Frustrates
  • Establishment, Convention

First, identify your preferred learning environment profile according to the four cardinal points, using the characteristics listed in each quadrant to guide your appraisal. Even if you favor qualities that appear in more than one quadrant, choose the quadrant that best aligns with your perspectives. Second, assess both the strengths and limitations of the learning profile environment you have selected as objectively as possible, referencing specific examples.

In your paper,

  • Explain how your creativity and innovation profile, ascertained by the exercises you completed in this week’s journal, align with the learning environment profile you have selected.
  • Discuss any inconsistencies you find between your creativity and innovation profile and this learning profile.
  • Choose an environment where learning takes place, aligned with your own field of interest. Assess this environment according to the criteria found in the Edinburgh Scenarios chart.
  • Explain whether or not you “fit” in this environment. Why or why not?
    • If you do currently “fit” in this environment, explain how you can leverage your own creativity and innovation profile within it and discuss specific examples for areas of growth.
    • If you do not currently fit in this environment, what would you do to either develop your own creativity and innovation profile to make you feel more productive in this environment or change this environment using your own creative and innovative solutions to shift the learning environment toward a quadrant that you find most productive?
  • Envision and then describe your ideal learning environment in your area of interest. What would it look like? What features would make it ideal? How would you work within this environment? What goals would you hope to achieve in this environment?
