1. You are and off-duty police officer and are invited to a party at an old friend’s house. It is Friday night, you are off, and have no plans, so you head to the party. Upon arrival, there is quite a gathering in the back yard, so you visit with people and am having a good time. You have had a couple of beers, and then head inside to the restroom when you notice several people in the house around a table with cocaine lines adorning the tabletop. You have never seen these people before, and your friend has been in the back yard the whole time you have been there. You look at them closely and realize that they are a part of a group known to the police department as armed and dangerous. One of them looks up at you and asks, smiling “Do you want a line?” You say “not now.” You go towards the restroom to consider what you will do. You can go out to the car and call for back-up, and conduct a raid. In fact, you know that you will receive a commendation for arresting these individuals. If you do this, they will arrest your friend and he will be implicated. If you do nothing, and the guys are arrested by someone else, they may be able to identify you, and you may be implicated along with your friend. Just then, your friend’s daughter who is 7 comes out of her bedroom and goes into the room with the guys with the cocaine and says to one man, “Uncle Dan, can you fix me some cereal?” You realize if you call for back-up, she might be taken as a hostage.
